Fond Farewell!

Hello Gang!

I will need an email from you when you have completed your book by Sunday night, so that I may assign your grade. I will do that on Monday morning bright and early.

If you have verbally asked for an "I" over the phone, or in the past over email, I need you to write an email to let me know where you stand right now, and what you need. Do not assume that I know what your needs are. Some of you have been less than communicative.

Some of you can still complete your books in time for our opening, even with the "I". So try!

If I do not get an email from you, you will get an "F", so be forewarned!

I will contact you all in the first week of classes so that we can organize our opening. All of our books are spectacular--we should be proud!

Thank you for the hard work that went into this experimental format. It was weird, but we did OK!

You can do an evaluation of this class on our "real class page" in Argus. Please do so soon!

Also, I made a ton of work out here, and I made a little blog to share it until I can get video on my website, and since you all had to put up with me during that crunch time, here is the link. Enjoy tearing me apart!! I invite the crit!

Assignment for Final Critique for Thursday, August 7th!

Hello All,

As you know, your books are due at LULU by midnight, Sunday, August 10th.

We will need one final opportunity to critique the work.
Please create a new blog where you upload the contents of your book, in order, from the front cover at the top of blog, to back cover at the end of blog. (Rezvan and Rebekah have already done so and you can look to theirs as an example should you not understand.)
Add your link in the Page Element to the right of our Class Blog page entitled "Book Projects."
Please have this done by midnight Wednesday August 6th, for critique on Aug 7th.
PLEASE CRITIQUE ON EACH PERSONS INDIVIDUAL BLOG--NOT ON OUR CLASS BLOG.

Also, we will need to address your 115 Daily Photo Blogs on that day. Please have these done by midnight Wednesday August 6th, for critique on Aug 7th. Those critiques will live on the class blog, as always.

This will give you a few more days for final tweaking before you publish your book with LULU.

IF YOU DO NOT CRITIQUE YOUR PEERS, OR HAVE YOUR BOOK BLOG FINISHED BY MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY, YOU WILL BE GIVEN A ZERO AS YOUR FINAL EXAM GRADE. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!

Give Rezvan Feedback on her New book

Hey guys, please go here:
http://rezvanfarahany2.blogspot.com/
and leave comments there.

How you should format your photos for LULU!

I have read the site and this is what I have concluded:

They prefer .tiff's, but will take jpgs. I urge you to "save as" .tiffs, because it retains more information in the file so that you have a crisp image.

Make sure that your image is 300 dpi. at the appropriate size for your book.

Although, it does not say to anywhere on the LuLu site, I believe that you should assign your profile as CMYK. Because it is going to press, this is what you should choose. It appears that if you do not, they will convert it themselves, but just so you know...
(In Photoshop under "Edit" choose "Convert to profile" then choose CMYK - U.S. Web Coated SWOP v2

Some of Sam's Photobook Photos So Far

These are possible photos for the cardboard section, which will be the first section of the book. I am sorry I am so behind with everything, I've encountered many obstacles in realizing these photographs. It's been very frustrating for all of us, I'm sure.

Anyway:

YES, there are going to people in the photographs as well. The above photo is not what I have in mind but it was all I was able to capture for the moment. A lot of the visual elements and materials are experimental.
I would like to talk about the concept behind my wanting people to occupy the space and why those photographs are so different from the photos and details of the space. BUT the above photo, I know, does not get that across.
I am borrowing my friend's camera and will post a photo with persons, one that I'll be more happy with that ties into my concept better.
here are photos of the space:

Indesign and lulu help

If anyone is interested, I will be in the computer lab around 2 to 4:30 on Thursday (during Rezvan's lab time) to help anyone who needs it with indesign and lulu. If you would like to share your knowledge of either or anything else OR you are struggling with either or anything else, come by I'll try my best to clear things up. I've worked with indesign for 4 years now and know just about anything you need to know for this project. I figured it's be easier handled in the lab than anywhere else.

Let me know if you are interested, or if there is a better time for you.

Hey Everyone,
I've got some text for you. Let me know if this font is working for you. I really like it's etherial feel. I haven't got the new cover done yet, haven't picked the right photo. I've cropped the Pegasus photo to exclude the trees and have tried to fix the image. I used an older camera and the lack of quality shows. Unfortunately, I cannot arange the clouds like that again;) I've got 3 for you with the text pages to go with them.
Here goes,

The pages will appear with the text page coming before the photo page as the book is open flat.
So that's it for tonight. Have a good one everyone.
Karen
Publish Post

I understand that I do not have the funding or time to travel to the four mega cities that I listed. I intend to represent these issues with the locations and tools I have available. Although these centers are the best examples; institutions of urban expansion are visible in rural areas as well.
I intend to take a minimalistic representational approach to the photos creating and finding patterns and designs within. Blurry, experimental, and even cheesy.

Rezvan's Book (no more) there is a new one

Thom's Book Stuff

Sorry this stuff is so late, but I've been sick for the past week and I changed my idea and decided to do the series documenting the practice spaces/areas where local musicians create and play music. The book is entitled "LABORATORIES" and the sample picture is my own personal practice space. I'll have my statement page and some other samples up a little later.

The picture was taken with a Sony Cyber-Shot but I plan on using a Canon D-20 for the actual book.

Sam

She needs more time, she has my permission to post by tomorrow before midnight. Please check back on Monday for her.

Jeannine's Book Sketch III.

I've changed my book size to square, 8.5x8.5, perfect binding/paperback.

This is a new cover I've created, but I honestly don't think I'll use it. This was practice to see if I could find and edit a better font. (For some reason, blogger isn't enabling this picture to be viewed at full view, but the font looks much better enlarged. The letters are composed of small, yet spaced, dots.)

As far as other photo edits go, I've been extremely ill lately and haven't spent a good amount of time to crop and color correct each photo. I randomly selected some pictures to edit, so here are a few POSSIBLE pages from the book.

I literally have over 1,000 photographs in this series, so wish me luck narrowing the lot of them down to 35 images MINIMUM.

Newest of the bunch:

I am having issues with grey pictures. I will try taking some brown and grey outside as well as looking for items at a thrift store.

I have the layout set up in indesign and this is how the book will flow:
Lay out [INSIDE]
1- title page

2-3 define: "Belonging to neither kind; not one thing or the other."
3-4 dark brown
5-6 medium/mixed brown
7-8 light brown

9-10 define: "possessing no distinctive quality or characteristics"
11-12 beige
13-14 white
15-16 grey/white

17-18 define: "Neither good nor bad; not decided or pronounced"
19-20 light grey
21-22 medium grey
23-24 dark grey

25-26 define: "Not electrically charged"
27-28 grey/black
29-30 black
31-32 black

33 artist statement or final words (not sure)

Jessica Nall-Book

Hey! So I changed the focus of my book. I suddenly found myself more interested in this subject matter rather than what I was working on. I am currently in the mist of re-writing my artist statement. I decided to do a landscape paperback 9x7.

Attention LULU Folks!

Hey guys!
As usual, there is a glitch in our plan to use LULU as a crit device. It just isn't going to happen, as Karen stated, we can only view what one has published. So I have to ask a big favor!
Please repost what you posted on Lulu, here on this blog, so that we can give you feedback.
I will extend our crit date to this Saturday so that EVERYONE will have time to get the work posted here and get their Blogs updated as well.

Next Wednesday will be a telephone critique with me. I will need you to email me your # and a good time to call.

I am so sorry about the confusion!

Rebekah's Book.

top 3 are my latest photos.

Here are my images for the book. The first one is my new cover. My book size is 7.5 by 7.5. I have decided not to apply a filter to any of the images.

Pegasus

Crystal Skull

Crashing Wave (or whales tail...)

Hey Everyone,

It appears that on Lulu.com, although we are in a group together, we can only view each others published works, not the works in progress. This being the case, I'll describe what's going on with my book.
I've settled on a book format. I'll be doing the 8.25 x 10.75 and have uploaded 5 formatted photographs so far. I will be laying out the book in landscape, which means the cover will have to be lifted upwards rather than turning to the left. I couldn't find a landscape option. Please let me know if any of you have found one. I have not worked on any of the text for these photos, however I will be taking your advise regarding the text and will post samples next week. As the layout goes, I will have the photo laying flat, and the text on the page that is lifted up. Today's samples are interior page photographs.

Well wishes to all,

Karen

Okay, So, I have way more done now. I'm not where I need to be, but I think I made good progress. I have a cover idea up as well as page 1, 2, and 3. I think I will make all my pictures vertical, so I will re-take my first brown picture. This week I am going to work toward having several images of each color. I will be retaking the black one tomorrow. As for layout I am thinking really simple. Any ideas in that department?
