Thom's Book Stuff

Sorry this stuff is so late, but I've been sick for the past week and I changed my idea and decided to do the series documenting the practice spaces/areas where local musicians create and play music. The book is entitled "LABORATORIES" and the sample picture is my own personal practice space. I'll have my statement page and some other samples up a little later.

The picture was taken with a Sony Cyber-Shot but I plan on using a Canon D-20 for the actual book.

I hope you feel better soon! I am glad to see you posting!

I don't really like the title page. It seems like a lot of thing I have seen before. Maybe I just expect a lot out of you. You're work generally blows me away. This one doesn't do that. Also, Red on black makes the type vibrate. Can you make a few more and post them on here?

Are you going to have people in the spaces or empty? I worry that this will be difficult. I know it would be for me. Lighting these spaces so they capture the viewers attention will be difficult. I keep thinking about how hard it was for me to take pictures of dead ends. Setting up an image gives you more control. I look forward to seeing more pictures!

Will you have much text?

I like the concept for your book but and I love the picture that you took. I think the cover can be created better to describe your project as a whole. I can't wait to see more to understand exactly where you are headed.

I dig the title page. But it would be nice to see a few more options, you are so talented with text. The idea as a whole is nice and I am looking forward to seeing more photos.

Glad you are better!

I am not clear on whether you intend to create a concept book or a documentary book with this subject matter.

If you go documentary, I feel that you will need to talk to your viewer/reader about why these people and these spaces in this town or semi-rural region even?

If you go conceptual, I feel like you are really going to have to get creative to take us to a place where these photos become more than documents.

Let me know your thoughts on which direction you plan to take and I can give better feedback.

I also think that you have the ability to make a very stunning book cover. This looks too easy, too last minute.

I look forward to seeing more options.

Hi Thom,

I'm looking forward to seeing all these practice places. I'm picturing chrome and wires, microphones and drums, egg crate foam and moving blankets..... and beer cans/bottles;) Will you be pulling out for a wide shot as in the image of you or will you be getting in close also? I like the idea.

I'm with the others regarding your cover. You have already shown us such great work with text that it's hard accept such a simple cover from you. Can you chrome it? Maybe run some wires through it. Alright, I'll shut up now;) Can you tell I like the idea?

I really hope you are feeling better. Being sick sucks.

Peace,

Karen

Tom,
I like the title of your book. The word 'laboratories' works well with the subject matter you are trying to capture. I like the font of your title page but its too in your face and big. Your image really captures the solitude of your space. I'm really interested in seeing some other spaces and how you will capture the mood.

Hey Thom,

I was waiting a little while to see if you would elaborate on the direction you are going in with this book, but I understand that it's crunch time and you've probably been very busy. I like the cover without an image. Although, I will agree with many of our classmates and say that I don't think the bold black/red is a good choice for colors. Every time I even look at text and the presentation of it, I think to myself, "Ok. Would Thom actually work with this?" And I hadn't pegged this cover of text as you at all. Give it some more thought and make the color pop in a way that isn't so strenuous to the eye. As far as the image goes, it looks solid to me. I'd like to see more images, but I suppose we'll get to them when you've posted to pre-publishing book blogger. Good luck, ok?
