I already have my lulu account setup, if I have more than 30 pages i'd like to do a perfectbound 8.5"x8.5". I'm pretty sure I won't be using text and will, instead, have the image bleed (maybe.)
Covers?
Covers?

First Page

Covers: Between the three, or even as another option, the third image without the image, just text. What kind of vibe are you getting from the cover?
Statement: Critiques --welcome with open arms, pleeeease ! Not sure about layout. will most likely take out the image on the bottom. I just don't like it, the more I look at it; too busy.
First Page: I'm thinking an image of the space as it exists daily. Should I give the viewer that information or should I jump right into it? If I do use an image of the room as it usually is, I will use a wider angle, setting up the shot so the composition remains consistent with the proceeding photos.
I do need help making some decisions though, and I think maybe the artist's statement may need something else? maybe not?

Sam-
I really enjoy the muted colors and the design of your book. In my opinion, the second cover fits the best. I am unsure if you should show the living space as is before you jump into the actual manipulated living space because I think either option would work.

I'm confused. Weren't you redoing you living room with various materials? OR did I miss something?
Your design is beautiful, but I would like to see more that you come up with. Maybe try to convey how the living room makes you feel through layout. That sounds weird. I guess I would like to see more pictures. I think I am feeling cover #2 the most. Will there ever be any people in the living room? I'd go back over the artist statement. I'm not sure what need work, but I think a little tweaking would be good. I think see if you can make the voice feel like your inviting us into your home. I hope that helped!

Hi Sam,
I vote for cover #1.
I feel like it is clean and interesting---but (I think I know you by now) I trust that you will redo this many times before you settle--these are all GREAT STARTS!
I am not sure that I want to see the "real" Living Room. I am not sure I want the mystery revealed.
I dig the white cover--clean. I dig the idea that the images will bleed out to the edge so that there is no frame--no end to the room. I am not sure that you need a ton of text. A short statement will do the trick and we will help you perfect it as you go along.

Well--second thought--- perhaps the real living room will be necessary for scale--so people do not think that the others are small mock ups.
The statement looks really good right now--it will develop perfection the more you revisit it.
Wow, I think everything here is really solid. I prefer the cover without the photo, but all of them would work.
*yoda voice* The Text is strong in you. Much learning, have you done young one.
Jessica Emrick-
I am doing my living room in other materials, but seeing as I am in Canada it is a little hard to work on it, it is only a mock up after all. I stated before, and also alluded to in my statement, that people will be in the photos as well, one page with the living room with a material and the facing page with the living room worked in the same material but with people.
I know my statement may not be so clear with that though.
I kind of wanted to not be too inviting, lest I sound like a Martha Stewart Living magazine. I want it to have a more voyeuristic feel, maybe.
As I noted at the bottom of the post under "first page" I was trying out an image of the living room as it usually exists, but was not sure if I wanted to give the viewer that information before I jumped into the images of the living room worked in different materials. but again it is only a mock-up.
I am a little stressed out because I will have lost 8 days in july to work on these photographs and one of my roommates has already moved out. The other roommate is thinking of moving out too, and I think that is her furniture and she will be taking it with her, so I worry about consistency if the furniture goes away and I have to buy new furniture. I think that could be ok, though?
I don't know!
Thanks for the feed back guys. I'm leaving Canada in 4 days and you can be sure I'll be getting right into it.
Sam,
I agree with Valerie and Thom about the cover. Option one is the nicest because it’s simple and clean. I love the text you’ve chosen for content and cover, too. I would only straighten out the actual wording of your statement. It is a bit messy to read mainly because of a few awkward fragments and lack of capitalization in some places. Was that intentional? I apologize if I sound like a grammar nazi. However, I do like the image at the bottom of the statement page as is. I think it’s kind of intriguing to see a little piece of the actual image on the third page, which is lovely by the way. We need to see the living room on that third page as it normally is so that we can be more amazed by the transformations you create. I feel it’s necessary. The size of the book and the bleed-pages will look great. Anyway, girl, I hope your room mate doesn’t run off with the couch! You’re off to a very nice start. Have a safe trip back home.

Sam:
Great book. I think the cover with no image works best, simple and to the point. The artist statement is nice, I dig your idea of a "living room" and how you included that in the statement, it seems important to make your view clear from the beginning before divulging into your photos. The first image is working well, are you still going to cover the living room in different materials?

Sam, I feel odd saying this because of every body else's comments, but I think I like the second cover better. I know the first one is clean and to the point but I don't think it'll go with your images inside, you know? I would choose a cover that reflects the photos, and I see that more in the second cover than the first one. And the statement can be better too, I know you can write better than this, just play with several drafts and see which one works the best. I really like your idea and your use of text, VERY NICE and strong.

I also enjoy the first title page the most. I'm not sure I feel the artist statement when I view the first page, but I'm sure that will change as I view more of your images.
Hi Sam,
I'm learning from you as far as your use of text goes. Thank you;) I really like covermockup2 out of the options you put up for your cover.
As far as your statement page goes, the design of is wonderful, but I'm not so sure about the statement itself. I think it needs tweaking. I think the first sentence can be eliminated entirely. The rest is good in concept, it just needs to be rearranged, like furniture in a living room, to be more comfortable.
I love the quality of the light in your first page. There's a softness and comfort in there that a living room would be dead without. I like that the cushion of the sofa is scrunched. It creates softness in otherwise hard lines. Too bad you don't like it! ;)
I hope this helps and doesn't come too late.
As always, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Karen
P.S.
I know someone looking for a roommate.
