rebekah's cover, statement & 1st page.

Cover page: I wanted it to be less about the person and more about the words, with a quirky twist. I am open to serious suggestions and ideas.

Artist Statement: The whole page will be my statement, written down in my handwriting (perfection is not the goal). Maybe even some side notes and stuff scratched out on the final page. Ideas welcome also.

1st page: I have been taking photos of backgrounds I like and then finding people to go in them. I like how the cubbies mimic the page Danny is holding. And all the  things in the background add visual interest. I dig this photo but I wish he could have really gave me something more personal and dark.  Every page will cover the entire book page, no borders or page numbers.

Wonderful! I am absolutely excited about your book. I love your cover. I like how the blur gives whoever is in the picture a bit of an identity shield. It would make the focus the words and the subject matter as opposed to the people. I want to see if you could do something like that for all your images. I love the hand writing. In the page one. I think you should work on cropping. I want the whole paper in the image. It needs something. Other than being in your series I really don't want to look at it. I guess thats why i suggest playing with hiding their identities.

good job so far!

I like everything about your book. I'm glad you got a better camera! My only crit is about your cover. I think you should look directly into the camera and not have such a happy face.

Rebekah,

SUper stoked. I think the cover could just be fingers holding the page that you are holding super close up. You all fuzzy is confusing.

I like that Danny is wearing shades and holding that word. He really hates being called that, so it is a big one for him. I am sure you will get a range.

I LOVE the written statement, it works with the idea. I am glad you don't have a super perfect swirly girl handwriting. I needs to NOT be neat, but not illegible.

In terms of the blog crit, would you mind calling me, and we can look at it and anything else together, and I will crit you all that you want? My hands are falling off from typing! You cannot do much with those images as you have NO control of the camera in the computer, I think you are doing a good job with such restrictions, but again, I am happy to talk more at length.

I think, for the cover, all you need to do to take away focus from the person is just crop their eyes out. That way the sign is focal and center but the person isn't totally blurred (I don't really like that). Also I think your statement should be really short and to the point because what you're doing sort of explains itself you know? Anyway, love the idea, keep going with it. Oh and Danny IS a stoner. (shh don't tell him I said that).

Rebekah,

I have to agree with those who say the fuzzy image of you is not where it is at. Play around with the cover images a little more,i think cropping in on the hands holding the sign is a nice idea as well.

Your statement has a nice aesthetic and will mesh with the hand written signs the subjects in your book will be holding --very nice and thoughtful on your part.

otherwise, no complaints! do it to it, girl!

Rebekah,

I really like this idea you have. The only thing I’d like to see different is- maybe forget about similar shapes from foreground and background and give each person a sense of privacy without totally blocking out their image. Think church confessional, but without all the criss-crossed lines. I actually like the cover a lot, so perhaps you could try blurring your subjects in some way or putting a censor block over their eyes (kind of what Thom suggested). The statement is very well written, so just keep taking pictures and see what you can do.

Rebekah, I love the statement and that it's hand written, and i like the cover too, except you are smiling, I didn't notice it the day you took it. So don't smile next time and it'll go much better with the book idea. :)
Everything is working well with your book, Great

I believe the blurred background could work if executed differently, the way it is currently cropped needs to be changed though. I'm not sure how you would do this though. I love that your statement is handwritten, and that the subject writes the word on the paper themself. I believe an interesting background is important as well. I dig this idea, goodluck!

Hi Rebekah,

This is a great idea!

Your statement is good and being handwritten is the perfect compliment to the idea. My only issue with it is gramatical. If you are choosing to use the gramatical errors to portray the less than perfect side of all of us, it works. I'm just a sticler for grammar.

As for the cover photo, I like the blur, but the way it cuts the fingers holding the sign bugs me.

I'm looking forward to seeing your book. If I were in it, I'd be holding a sign that said, "Edith" or "Dingbat." (from Archie Bunker, way before your time..)

Have a wonderful weekend!

The layout that you have in mind works greatly with your book. For the cover page, i think that you should fix the blurriness a little bit. The handwriting of the statement goes perfect with your idea. I can't wait to see what words that others use to describe their feelings.
