Jessica Nall- Book Sketch 2

Cover-
This cover is a very rough sketch. I plan to play more with the text. The program I have on my computer isn't as great as Photoshop. I may also change the picture. This will just depend on the pictures I take over the next couple of weeks. I also thought of having a solid color cover with the title (no picture).

Artist Statement-

This may or may not stay. This statement will be on the first page or inside cover of the book. The words will be surrounded by negative space.

First Page-

Again, mock photo. My new picture will be in focus.

I would really like to see some finished photos. The combination of natural and unnatural textures could be beautiful. When you are taking pictures try and work with complimentary colors. That will cause your images to pop. Totally need something better to work with if your image editing program isn't all that good. I think there are some good free programs if you look a bit on the internet. When you work on your cover try and play with making the textures pop on the image and the colors loose vibrancy. Make your text much bigger and look around on text websites like Thom showed us.

I know you can make this beautiful! I want to see new pictures!

Hi Jess,

I am with Jessica. I need new photos--that was the goal of this assignment was to get cracking on some new images.

Love the idea--statement is almost there. Short and interesting--hung up on the word "soup" ---tooooooooo visual and it is not textual per se.

Give me new stuff!

My only crit is kinda like the crit I gave karen. I think the cover image should be a completely different image (not just angle) and that you should use the cover as an opportunity for another picture or some text art or something. Other than that, it's lookin gooood

Jessica,

I agree, new photos! Or even playing with curves or levels in photoshop to make the red pop in your mock photo. Thom also makes an excellent point.

Jessica N.,

I really love these photographs, but I do think you should try to edit them with a different program to really make those colors and textures pop. Stop by school during lab hours to use photoshop if you have to. Keep playing with text. You seemed a little rushed during this sketch, so just take this time to really get some new images and see what else you can come up with. You’ll be surprised at the amount of cover-worthy material you’ll have after a few shoots. As far as text goes, I don’t mind the font. The statements seems slightly detached from your actual idea, but it’s nicely written. Play around with a few more words and get it perfect. I know you have it in you. :)

I feel like I really need to see at least one more photo to have some comparison. Have to agree with val ...soup takes me to another place in my mind. But I like the rest.

I love textured images, but I really would like to see new photographs, since I remember these from class. I believe you should work on the artist statement a bit more as well. I'm sure these images will be beautiful.

Hi Jessica,

I really like the concept of contrasting materials and think it would be great to see that even in your statement. As I looked at it, in that sharp edged font, I was thinking satin or nylon (as in panty hose) would make a nice back drop for your statement. Just a thought. I am also on board with the "soup" hang up. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Enjoy!

Ive loved your idea from day 1 but I need to see more to understand exactly where your book is going. I love the statement-short and sweet- but I think it needs a few minor changes to it. Other than that, Im exciting about seeing the new pictures that you have taken.
