Tiffany's Broad Book Ideas

I am still unsure.

However, here are two still very broad ideas...neither of which I am prepared with an example.

1) I am going to Peru in a few weeks and I am thinking of taking either landscape or architectural photos. However, I am trying to develop a less conventional, conceptual way of dealing with the landscape and or architecture there...I might build on the spot sculptures that mimic the landscape, or architecture, or maybe I can use a different type of camera such as my cellphone, a pinhole, or polaroid. Clearly, I am unclear on this.

2) Underwater, landscapes, in different bodies of water, also incorporating quickly constructed sculptures.

Sorry, for not having any example images, but I definitely could use some feedback on my ideas.

I like the second idea better. I was going to do different lanscapes from Italy and France, but I didn't want to bore the audience. Underwater is always eye catching to me.

Hi Tiffany,

The landscape of Peru itself sounds like a great photo series opportunity. High quality photos of such an interesting landscape would hold my attention. Regarding the underwater landscape, will you be in tropical waters with coral reefs for these photos or around here? That could go either way, luminous healthy water teaming with fish or murky thick water littered with human debris. I’m interested to see what you come up with.

Have a safe trip,

Karen

I think both will be beautiful. I personally think that it is important to go with the sculpture idea either on land or under water.

It would be difficult to compete with the plethora of documentary photographers who travel abroad. The sculptures ground YOU in the place, physically making you interact with the elements there. That process is important. You have an urge and a unique opportunity to do it. Go for it!

The underwater idea is exciting and ambitious. I would like to see the end result. Architectural photos are on par with still lives in painting and could be interesting to capture outside of the box. Pin hole cameras can offer really beautiful images. Enjoy Peru.

Here's an idea dealing with landscape and architecture:

Take a landscape picture and build on it with images of buildings throughout the book.

each image will grow up a little more into a town or city.

try all kinds of things and see what you like best!

Tiffany-
I'm really into your second idea with the underwater sculptures. I think these could result into some really beautiful images.

Tiffany,

You have the chance to make a book overseas, do it! Making the mini sculptures sounds like a great idea, you are leaving your little stamp on the world. Go for it.

Tiffany,

Both of your ideas sound really intricate. I would be excited to see either one created. If you did the first idea, I’m not sure how much I would enjoy the images of sculptures in cell-phone quality. I guess you’re planning to do sculptures for both? That, in general, is really fun. You would be able to make a lot of interesting representations of the places that you see. Post some photos when you get the chance!

Tiffany,

I like the idea of you going to Peru and pursuing the landscape idea the best --Especially with tiny sculptures. This makes me think about landscape in a different way and a different scale (pun intended.)

My brain started going in a million different directions with your first idea, so I'm not sure how to best voice my interpretation of the possibilities within the Peru landscape photos. Will you be visiting various regions? Countryside or will you be in the city mostly? It seems to lend itself to a commentary on the human/ecological footprint. Either way it's a brilliant opportunity and I am very excited for you.

You should do the project justice and use a quality camera (i.e. maybe not a cellphone.) Pinhole would be fun as well, but would you have the resources required for the process it demands? And with pinhole I'm afraid so much of your attention would be taken up by the medium itself ... though it would give a nice photo quality.

I can't wait to see your photos, it'll be much easier to elaborate once I've seen a sample image.

I think you should definitely take advantage of the fact that you're going to be in Peru. I think there is a lot of potential for some great work to come out of the first idea. I like the idea of a foreigner coming into a strange new place and appropriating it quickly, as if you're visually manifesting your first impressions of the area.

Either idea sounds quite enjoyable. However, do you have the equipment to take high-quality underwater pictures? I wouldn't suggest using a disposable underwater camera. On the spot sculptrues might be more easily consrtucted on land anyways. I look forward to the result.
